The Unfinished Angel

I am a school librarian, and as such, I should be reading more books aimed at Y7-Y9. With this in mind I picked up The Unfinished Angel by Sharon Creech and I finished reading it today.

I really enjoyed it… I do love the way the angel speaks. Its vocabulary is confused and it has mixed up word coinage, yet often the nonsense makes more sense, such as when Angel talks of the younger people leaving the sleepy pretty village they live in, “leaving old people to bend for themselves.” Angel joins words together, or simply adds on other endings, such as, “Shockfulled” “Surpleased” and “Impressified”.

Angel is both sweet and grumpy and floats around not really sure of its purpose (which sounds shockingly familiar…)

The Unfinished Angel is full of acts of kindness and big smiles… it has faith in people with a little help from angels and faith in angels with a little help from “peoples.” This would be a great book to read out loud to children.
